Chengdu Baosteel to make Coke, Pepsi, cans in China
Chengdu Baosteel Canmaking Co., Ltd. has begun operations in China. The new company has an annual can output of 460 million units and will mainly produce cans for Coca-Cola, Pepsi Cola and Snow Breweries Co.

Graham Packaging stake sold to Hicks Acquisition
A consortium led by private equity firm The Blackstone Group has reached an agreement to sell part of their stake in Graham Packaging Holdings Company to Hicks Acquisition Company. Graham Packaging is a designer and manufacturer of custom blow-molded plastic containers.

Alcan to build new plant in Czechoslovakia

Kraft and TerraCycle launch new recycling program
Kraft Foods announced a recycling partnership with TerraCycle, in which schools and community groups collect wrappers from select packaged snack products. Under the arrangement, Kraft provides funds so TerraCycle can pay 2 cents for each cookie wrapper or drink pouch.

Norampac closes Toronto boxboard mill
Norampac is shutting down its Toronto boxboard mill indefinitely. The closure will take place no later than September 14, 2008. The Toronto mill could produce up to 180,000 short tons of coated recycled boxboard (CRB) per year.

Winpak buys Walsroder Packaging
Winpak will acquire the film packaging business of Walsroder Packaging LLC, a subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company. Walsroder is a well-known converter and distributor of flexible plastic rollstock packaging to the United States food industry.

Mexico is among leading aluminum-can recyclers
Mexico recycles 98 percent of its aluminum cans compared to an average of 66 percent globally, according to the national chamber of metal packaging manufacturers Canafem, daily Reforma reports. The amount of raw materials used to produce the cans has fallen 18 percent over the last 15 years, the report said, adding that recycling centers now pay 14 pesos/kg ($1US.35/kg) for aluminum cans, bringing big energy and cost savings.

Coca-Cola to build plant in Ireland
Coca-Cola has announced plans for a new plant in Wexford, Ireland. The IDA-supported facility will be based on a 41-acre site, and will include manufacturing, laboratory and pilot-plant facilities.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group has finalized an agreement to open a $120 million production and distribution facility in Southern CA. The 850,000-sq.ft. production and distribution center will be able to produce up to 40 million cases of product, and the plant is expected to employ 200 people.
